Bay Area OKO120 Backyard Office Pod Case Study

Creating a backyard office that feels personal, practical and architecturally refined was the goal behind this standout project in the Bay Area, San Francisco. Designed for a client with a strong eye for detail, this bespoke office pod demonstrates how a compact footprint can still deliver a highly functional and visually striking workspace.

The project was based on our OKO120 range, designed specifically to remain under 120 square feet. This allows homeowners to add a backyard office pod without the need for permitting, making it an attractive solution for those wanting a faster and simpler installation process.

A Fully Customized OKO120 Office Pod

From the beginning, the client wanted the pod to feel unique and tailored to the surrounding landscape. Rather than choosing a standard finish, the design was upgraded with yakisugi cladding, giving the exterior a bold and contemporary appearance while adding texture and character to the overall structure.

An overhang feature was also incorporated into the design, helping to frame the entrance while adding depth to the architecture of the pod. These details helped create a more premium and bespoke finish that suited both the property and garden setting perfectly.

To maximize the internal layout, the client requested that the doors be positioned to the right hand side of the pod. This small but important adjustment allowed the interior space to function exactly how they needed, creating better flow and more usable wall space for furniture and storage.

Coordinated Exterior Lighting Design

One of the standout features of this project is the exterior lighting design. We worked closely alongside the landscape designer to ensure the lighting on the pod matched the wider lighting scheme being installed throughout the garden.

This collaborative approach helped the office pod feel fully integrated into the outdoor space rather than appearing as a separate structure. The finished result creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere during the evening while highlighting the clean architectural lines of the building.

Attention to details like this can completely transform the overall feel of a backyard office project and elevate the final result.

Bespoke Birch Plywood Interior Fitout

Inside the pod, the fit out was completed with custom birch plywood joinery to create practical shelving and cabinet storage throughout the workspace.

The birch plywood finish adds warmth and texture to the interior while maintaining a clean modern look. The bespoke shelving also gave the client the flexibility to personalize the office with artwork, books and decorative pieces that reflect their personality and working style.

The combination of natural materials and tailored storage solutions helped turn the pod into a space that feels both functional and creative.

A Backyard Office with Real Personality

What makes this project especially memorable is how the client truly made the space their own. From the customized exterior finishes to the carefully styled interior shelving, every detail reflects their personal taste and lifestyle.

The finished pod is a fantastic example of how a compact backyard office can become far more than just a workspace. It is a comfortable retreat, a creative environment and an extension of the home itself.

For homeowners exploring modern backyard office ideas, this Bay Area project shows how thoughtful design choices and bespoke finishes can completely transform a compact office pod into something unique and inspiring.
