Our client was remodeling the backyard of their terraced home and wanted a custom pod positioned at the end of the yard to serve as a dedicated work from home office.

The goal was to create a simple and understated design that would act as a backdrop to the landscaping rather than dominate the outdoor space. Clean lines, natural textures, and high quality materials were central to the overall design approach.

Yakisugi Cladding as a Standout Feature

One of the defining features of this backyard office pod is the beautiful Yakisugi cladding. The charred wood finish adds warmth, texture, and depth to the exterior while maintaining a clean and contemporary appearance.

As a natural material, Yakisugi works especially well in landscaped outdoor spaces, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The rich tones of the burnt wood create a striking contrast against greenery while still feeling subtle and refined.

Bringing More Natural Light into the Workspace

To create a brighter and more comfortable interior, a roof light was added to the design. This additional glazing allows daylight to reach deeper into the pod throughout the day, helping the office feel more open and inviting.

Designed to Maximize Backyard Space

Inside the pod, birch plywood was used throughout to create a warm Scandinavian inspired aesthetic. The natural wood finish gives the office a calm and welcoming feel while adding texture and character to the interior.

Sustainable Foundations with Faster Installation

The foundations for the pod were installed using a steel raft system rather than traditional concrete foundations. This method significantly reduces the amount of concrete required, making the installation more sustainable while also speeding up the onsite build process.

Using a steel raft foundation also helps minimize disruption to the backyard, which is especially important for homes with limited access.
