Maximizing Space in a London Backyard Flat

Living in a ground-floor flat in Islington, our client was looking for a way to add more usable space to her long, narrow backyard, typical of a London terrace. She wanted a versatile retreat, somewhere to work, unwind to watch a film or read a book, and potentially host overnight guests in the future.

Designed with flexibility in mind, this Okopod was built to evolve with her needs. With space for a future bathroom and bed, it can easily transition into a fully self-contained annexe. A cleverly placed curtain allows the office area to be sectioned off, instantly creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

Since flats don’t share the same UK permitted development rights as houses, we took care of the entire planning application process, ensuring everything was approved before construction began. The result? A stunning, functional space that not only enhances daily life but also adds value to the property. Finished in striking yakisugi sidding, the pod blends beautifully into the landscaped garden. This traditional Japanese wood-charring technique enhances durability while highlighting the natural texture of the timber, making the pod a stylish and enduring addition to the home.
