A Dream Studio Brought to Life

This project began as a long-held dream for Katharina Klugg, a Cambridge-based ceramic artist. As a potter, Katharina deeply values space, and for years, she wished for a larger, more functional studio. When she and her partner started their search for a new home, their top priority was finding a property with enough room to accommodate her creative practice.

After an extensive search, they discovered a 1980s-built home by Ivor Richards, featuring striking mid-century design elements and, most importantly, a garden spacious enough to bring Katharina’s dream studio to life.

Our collaboration with Katharina and her partner resulted in a studio space that integrates into their garden while prioritising sustainable design. From the outset, we embraced eco-conscious building techniques, ensuring the structure would be both visually striking and environmentally responsible.

Key design elements include:

  • Maximising Natural Light: Thoughtfully positioned windows enhance daylight exposure, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Sustainable insulation and timber-based construction minimise environmental impact, avoiding unnecessary concrete use.
  • Tree Preservation: To protect the mature trees on-site, the studio was built on piles, allowing tree roots to flourish undisturbed while providing a stable foundation.
  • Striking Exterior: Clad in Grandis with shadow gap detailing, the studio blends beautifully with its surroundings while offering a sleek, modern aesthetic.

The result is a space that not only supports Katharina’s creative work but also embodies the principles of sustainable architecture and contemporary design.

Thank You for Your Support

We are incredibly proud of this project and a huge thank you to Katharina Klugg, our talented collaborators, and everyone who has supported our journey. We look forward to celebrating sustainable, forward-thinking architecture together!
